As if it wasn’t crazy enough to run a 5k on Black Friday, I decided to do the Santa Sprint & Stroll on Saturday. It was cold. ‘Nuf said. But really, I don’t remember the temp but it was snowing. It was slushy and cold. This was outside my house as we left for the race.
The ground was a little slick in places too. I was bundled up! I don’t do well in cold.
I ended up ditching the yellow ear warmer thing before the race. I wanted to cover my ears and my hat didn’t completely do that. But my ears were never cold! Check out the awesome hat!
Lets do a comparison of what Rachel and I were wearing
How she didn’t freeze to death, I’ll never know! Here is what I was wearing:
- Hat
- Ear warmers
- An ear warmer around my neck. It worked ok. My neck was really cold for the 5k the week before so I knew I wanted to put something around my neck. This was the best solution.
- 2 long sleeve tech shirts
- A sweetshirt
- Fleece jacket
- Pants
- Gloves
- A pair of socks. I could have used another pair.
It was perfect! I never really got too cold or too hot. My hands did get a little warm in the gloves but not too bad!
I was the warmest of them all! Until I went outside.
Brr! Luckily it wasn’t too bad after the race started. Check out the pictures Dad took while we were running.
The course wasn’t much to look at, but the best part of the race had to be the Girls on the Run team! I have never seen them at a race before but have heard great things about them from Caitlin.
It was so neat to see all the girls running on the course. I had a great time clapping and cheering for them every time I saw them. It made the race so much more fun!
I really enjoyed the race. Mostly because I got a PR (personal record) of 34:28!!! How I pulled that off in the snow, I’ll never know. I guess all this training is starting to pay off! My previous PR was 35:34 and that was in the spring and I ran the whole thing. I didn’t run all of Santa Sprint…I wish I had but running is still really mental for me.
There is a series of 3 races in Dec, Jan and Feb called the Polar Bear Grand Prix (Reindeer Romp, Snowman Shuffle and Frostbite 5k). I’d love to try them but last time there was a lot of ice and snow. Seems to me that I’m done with races until the Princess Half. I wouldn’t want to injure myself on ice before that race. That would be awful!
Have you ever run in the snow?
